Dissipated Assets
By Steve Weems, author of soon-to-be published The Pleasure of Displacement
I do not know much about poetry, but there is much here to ponder, and the more I ponder, the more I think I understand. For the most part, the poems in this book are short and simple in structure, and they say a lot with few words. "Dissipated Assets" is a book I think I will be able to pick up time and time again and discover something new and clever with each reading..
Some (particularly Christians, but others, too) may find the longest poem in the book a little offensive (A Modest Proposal Modified To Meet Our Present Needs)... or they will find it a trigger for thought. Like Jonathan Swift's original, it is blunt and strong.
At the end of the book are notes that help explain some details of the poems - this is very helpful. I wish the poetry I read in college had the same type of notes available since I often had no idea what I was reading about. Many of the poems in this book are self-explanatory, though, and as the description of the book says, treat for those who love poetry and those who are about to.
